Here is an interesting deck railing idea: use goat wire fencing as the center of the panel. You won’t have any problems with the galvanized steel wire mesh rusting since it is a very stout galvanizing from the factory. Some people prefer the raw look of galvanized metal to the clean shine of stainless steel. This is a common fencing item at most local lumberyards or you can buy this Keystone Wire 7 Sheep & Goat Fencing online and have it delivered to your jobsite. It is a 4″x4″ galvanized wire mesh panel with wires 1/4″ thick. Rolls come in various lengths.

To build this deck railing idea, start by making a plan and a material list. Construiction begins with a hole drilled in the surrounding 2×2 loose frames into which the wire fits. The wire is 1/4″ thick, so drill the holes 5/16″. The wire grid is 4″ o.c. so that is the spacing. As the wire is welded in such a way that the horizontal wires are on top of the vertical wires, that places the centerline of horizontal and vertical 1/8″ offset each way to the centerline of the frame. This works for the horizontal pieces, but it’s trickier for the angled pieces over the stairs. Those have wires going in opposite directions within an inch of each other. Pay attention to that detail or there will be a struggle. Measure carefully, and have fun.

For this deck, the contractor used 3/8″ diameter stainless steel pipes as a railing idea. The wood in this railing corner detail is clear western red cedar. The ends of the rods can be threaded and then secured in place with a nut. Or they can just float in holes drilled in the wood railing posts. You can find the cedar at a local lumber company. The company that sells the stainless steel rods is Alco Metal. You would need to determine what size and quantity and they could give you a quote.

This is such a clean look for a deck railing idea, and wouldn’t have the problems associated with cable railing. I especially like the use of the 2x4s for the bottom part of the railing. The thin stainless steel pipes really open up the view through the handrail.

A 12 year old deck was given a makeover!  Atlantis Cable-Rail and NovaFlex Led lighting completed this deck railing idea. Quartzite stones were accents on the steps, benches and planters made of Cumaru decking, mahogany rail caps and posts. The decking was fastened with KREG KJDECKSYS Deck Jig and coated with Wolman Eht Hardwood sealer. We installed Clear View retractable screen doors to the house and an Otter Creek retractable awning over part of the deck. The sound system includes Bose outdoor deck speakers and Russound controls.
